Step 1: Discuss how words hurt.

  • Words can stir anger, create conflict, shatter dreams, distort truth, casting doubt, skepticism, and mistrust, crushing spirits.

Step 2: Discuss how words heal.

  • Words can lift people up, turn away anger, spread cheer, bestow grace, and comfort

Step 3: Rewrite your own narrative through positive statements

  • For Validation: “Feeling scared is okay”, “Powerless is hard”, “It’s okay to cry”, “I can do hard things”, “You can feel two emotions at once”, “I may cry but I will go on”, “That was a suprise”

  • For Confidence: “You can do it”, “You are good enough”, “You’re ready for this”, “You’re smart”, “Give it a try”, “Little accomplishments are a big deal”, “Effort is amazing”, “Nothing is impossible”, “Prepare as best we can”, “Take it one day at a time”

  • Be Genuine: “You’re beautiful”, “Fly like a butterfly”, “Be kind”

  • For Accomplishments: “Be proud of that”, “Celebrate that win”, “Don’t give up”, “Hard work pays off”, “Accomplishments take time”

  • For Limitations: "You’re never too old to try”, “You deserve happiness”, “Just Believe in Yourself”, “Keep at it”, “Hang in there”, “You’re stronger than you think”, “Best of luck on your journey”, “Keep learning”, “Rise above”, “Choose not to perservere”, “Noone has all the answers”

  • With Purpose: “Life has a meaning”, “You’re an inspiration”, “There is so much to be thankful for”, “We care”

  • For Talent: “Invest in yourself, “Show up”

  • For Optimism: “Choose good”, “Think about it”, “I’m rooting for you”, “You will get through it” “Trust in Good”, “That’s okay, I can adapt”

  • For Thanks: “Thank you for all that you do”, “Thanks for being a team player”

Step 4: Remember

  • At times fewer words is best

  • Limit I’m not enough statements

  • Use I feel or I believe statements

  • Strive to understand different perspectives
